With the start of Elbaf’s flashback, which not only shows Loki’s backstory, but also delves into the state of the One Piece world decades before the start of the story, fans have been introduced to a ton of new information. The most important of these deals directly with the legendary Rocks D. Xebec, who is remembered as the greatest and most quintessential pirate of all time, even more so than the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.
In Chapter 1156, Rocks explains to his crew that he is on the hunt for two specific Devil Fruits, one of which is the legendary treasure of Elbaf. The other is far more mysterious and the topic of a lot of One Piece theories, ranging from it being Luffy’s Nika fruit to it even being Law’s Ope Ope no Mi. However, one theory states that Rocks may also have a special relationship to Buggy’s Devil Fruit, so let’s see why this is.

Throughout the entirety of the One Piece story, Buggy’s Devil Fruit is the most like Luffy’s own, back when it was only known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi, with the exception of Katakuri’s Special Paramecia. This is because the ability of the fruit affects the user and their body in a strange way, allowing them to manipulate it however they choose. In terms of creativity, the Bara Bara no Mi is one of the greatest.
The main property of this Devil Fruit is the fact that it allows the user to split their bodies almost indefinitely into many smaller pieces that they can control individually. Buggy is shown to be a superb user of this power, which could be seen in the scenes where he turned himself into a car or when he learned how to fly during the Marineford arc. Buggy is not strong at all, but he is a proficient user of his Devil Fruit.
Why There May Be Much More To This Devil Fruit Than We Currently Know
A Strong Power Lies Within
- This fruit’s Awakening may reveal its true power.
Though it seems outlandish, fans have been wondering about the true potential of the Bara Bara no Mi for quite some time now. Just on the surface, this Devil Fruit makes the user almost immune to swords or other slashing weapons, which is actually a great advantage since many of the world’s pirates are swordsmen. In fact, it was even seen to be impervious to the slashes from the world’s strongest sword, used by the world’s strongest swordsman.
Despite this, there doesn’t seem to be much more utility than that. However, a popular fan theory states that the true power of the Bara Bara no Mi Devil Fruit will only shine once it has Awakened, similar to Luffy’s fruit since the Awakening allowed him to tap into his Nika powers. Since all Devil Fruit Awakenings make their users much stronger, it goes without saying that Bara Bara no Mi’s would be exceptionally powerful too, since Buggy could split others or entire land masses by himself if he undergoes it.
Awakening is what happens when your mind and body catch up to your powers! It’s very rare, but some powers can Awaken and affect objects aside from the wielder!
Many fans believe that Rocks D. Xebec had a close relationship with this fruit, which would also make sense with the prevailing theories of Rocks being Buggy’s actual father. Although it’s unlikely that the Bara Bara no Mi was the Devil Fruit Rocks was talking about in Chapter 1156, many think that he may have already had this fruit for himself before that, and his death meant that the fruit got away from him and, eventually, fell within the grasp of the Roger Pirates where Buggy ate it.
There’s only one reason that supporters of this theory cite for it, which is in Rocks’ first official appearance in the manga. While Loki is alone in the Underworld of Elbaf, the Rocks Pirates make their appearance on the land, but before appearing in front of the Accursed Prince, a mountain splits behind Loki. It’s still unclear who did this, but the common theory is that it was Rocks, who managed to cut the mountain with his sword.
However, this goes directly against what is known about Rocks’ swordsmanship, as he was renowned for using his blade more like a bludgeoning weapon of pure force than to cut and slash. His strikes were likened to hits from a ship’s cannonballs, so if he used his sword on the mountain, it likely would have been blown to pieces, as is hinted by his incredible powers. However, the fact that it split has led many fans to believe that Rocks may have been an Awakened user of the Bara Bara no Mi who could use its powers to an unprecedented degree.
Rocks even stated in Chapter 1156 that the Devil Fruit of Elbaf would only work best if Harald was the one to eat it, showing that although he had plans, he wanted someone else to eat the fruit. Similarly, he may have planned this with the other fruit he was after as well, whichever it may be, while all this time, he had the Bara Bara no Mi himself. This would check out the kind of character Rocks was. If it is anything like Luffy’s fruit, it’s possible that its Awakening manifests in yet another God Fruit power.
