Bloober Team has released another Cronos: The New Dawn developer diary, offering a deeper look into the game’s story and sharing some previously unrevealed details about its central mysteries. This latest look at the time-traveling survival horror game arrives mere weeks ahead of Cronos: The New Dawn‘s launch.
First announced in October 2024, Cronos: The New Dawn has recently locked in a release date: September 5. Bloober Team has been gradually sharing new information about the game since its reveal, detailing everything from its inspirations and enemy designs to combat and other gameplay mechanics.
Cronos: The New Dawn’s Cataclysmic Event Is a ‘Weird Disease’
Continuing this trend, the Polish studio has just debuted a new developer diary that delves into Cronos: The New Dawn‘s setting and story, featuring commentary from lead writer and narrative designer Grzegorz Like and producer Klaudia Sewera. The six-minute video begins by addressing The Change, a cataclysmic event that occurred in the game’s universe in the 1980s. Describing the nature of this mysterious catastrophe, Like referred to it as a “weird disease.”
Over the course of Cronos: The New Dawn, players take on the role of one of the Travelers, described by Bloober Team as “emissaries of the mysterious Collective.” Their title reflects their primary task: traveling back in time to locate specific targets—VIPs sought by the Collective—for extraction. While Bloober Team has previously outlined this premise, the new dev diary clarifies that the Travelers will not be rescuing these long-doomed individuals in the traditional sense. Instead, their mission is to “extract their essences,” a process Sewera likened to “taking away souls of human beings.”
Which characters you choose to extract will actually affect not only the gameplay but also how you perceive the whole game.
The video also saw Bloober Team confirm that players will be able to choose whom to extract. While it’s unclear how their choices might limit future actions, Sewera stated that extractions will offer both gameplay benefits in the form of perks and narrative insights. Elaborating on this notion, Like added that such decisions will influence not only Cronos: The New Dawn‘s gameplay but how players “perceive the whole game.” Based on this teaser, it would appear that the upcoming survival horror title will seek to deliver some degree of replay value.
Cosmic Horrors Aside, Cronos: The New Dawn Is a Game About Relationships
The new dev diary also reflects on another Traveler seen in one of the recent Cronos: The New Dawn trailers. Sewera identifies him as The Warden, revealing he’s the NPC in charge of maintaining the protagonist’s equipment and running the game’s mission hub. The Warden is just the tip of the iceberg that is Cronos: The New Dawn‘s cast, which Like says will include “a lot of characters,” tying back into Bloober Team’s ambition to use its games to “tell stories about people” and their relationships. Many of these characters will have interconnected backstories, fates, or both. One final detail from the new dev diary is that the game’s protagonist will begin with no knowledge of the events unfolding and will gradually uncover the mysteries of Cronos: The New Dawn alongside the player.
