Depicting monumental events such as the two World Wars, modern wars, and fictional, yet plausible modern wars, is just as popular in video games as it is in cinema. There is a wealth of war games for players to check out, with the majority of these being shooters, although a few focus solely on strategy, logistics, or individual stories.
Looking toward the future, there are a number of new and upcoming war games, some of which offer unique experiences, such as taking on the role of a medic or instead shine a light on certain lesser-known theaters of war.
Battlefield 6
All-Out Modern Warfare With Jaw-Dropping Graphics & Destruction Physics
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
- Release: 10th October 2025
- Developers: Battlefield Studios
After a 4-year absence and a hugely successful open beta, Battlefield 6 is not only the most anticipated war game, but also one of the most hyped games in general. BF6 will depict a war between NATO and an alliance known as Pax Armata in the very near future, with cities such as New York, Cairo, and Gibraltar serving as theaters of war in both the campaign and multiplayer maps.
As with all Battlefield games, players should expect large battles featuring dozens of players, with helicopters and jets dominating the skies, while tanks take out infantry. The graphics are a huge standout, as well as improved destruction physics, which have a real effect on gameplay, with cover being destroyed and new choke points created.
Medic: Pacific War
Play As A World War 2 Medic
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
- Expected Release: 2025
- Developers: Hypnotic Ants
While a number of war games allow players to take on the role of a medic, such as Foxhole, there aren’t any that solely focus on this vital role. Medic: Pacific War will therefore be a one-of-a-kind experience, as players will experience the Pacific theatre of war during World War 2 from the perspective of an American medic. Unlike most war games, which are shooters, the emphasis is on saving lives, not taking them.
In this single-player game, players must search for wounded soldiers and potentially stop them from bleeding or provide other immediate treatment, depending on a wide variety of wounds. If there are multiple wounded men, players will face a tough decision as to whom they take back to a field hospital. Perhaps they will be able to come back for the second man, but his survival will be far from guaranteed. On top of heartbreaking decisions, players must also manage their medical supplies, sometimes scavenging. Making it through enemy fire or past patrols is another danger for medics to face. This game is perfect for fans of the Hacksaw Ridge film, with players following in the heroic footsteps of Desmond Doss.
Gallipoli
Experience The Middle Eastern Front Of World War 1
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5
- Expected Release: 2026
- Developers: BlackMill Games
BlackMill Games is returning for their fourth World War 1 game, this time taking players to the Middle Eastern front in Gallipoli. While history buffs know all about this disastrous campaign, it is rarely depicted in modern media, although Ottoman forces were present in Battlefield 1.
Fans of previous installments in the franchise can expect all the same FPS realism and historical accuracy, but this time with beach landings and desert warfare. For those who are new, the formula for these games is squad-based multiplayer, although bots will fill up the ranks to make for more immersive battles.
The Last General
An RTS Strategy Game Where Players Can Also Jump Into The Action
- Platforms: PC, Linux, macOS
- Expected Release: 2026
- Developers: Wakety
The Last General is an RTS war game with huge potential, as players will not only be able to draw advancement lines and build while managing a wartime economy, but they will also be able to jump into the action themselves.
This project is the work of a solo developer, and the war depicted is very much modern, but with fictional, yet realistic factions. It will feature all aspects of warfare, including infantry, armored vehicles, and aircraft, all on a large scale with map sizes reaching up to 400km2 (154sq miles). It’s certainly one to keep an eye on for fans of tactics and logistics.
Spearhead 2
An Immersive Tank Simulator
- Platforms: PC
- Expected Release: TBA
- Developers: MicroPose Software
There are many games that allow players to drive tanks, but Spearhead 2 promises to take things to the next level, offering an immersive experience of all roles within a tank. One of the tanks in question is an M1A2 Abrams, and experts can expect to see exact details in each interior.
Thankfully, for those who prefer tactics and realistic tank battles, this is not a competitive multiplayer game like World of Tanks, but players can team up with up to 16 players in co-op. In such missions, communication is key, and there is a wide array of objectives that might be assigned, such as ambushing enemy convoys. The battlefields of Spearhead 2 are modern and wide-ranging, with some taking place in cities and others in vast, sprawling deserts. Tank repairs are something else that will have to be considered, and other than tanks, there are Armored Personnel Carriers and Infantry Fighting Vehicles.
