7 Things Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Does Better Than Other Soulslikes
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a brand-new action RPG inspired by Chinese history, and there are a few ways that it improves on the Soulslike genre.
The first impression that a player will have about a boss is going to come from their design, and considering how much can be gleaned about their personality and even their fighting style, based on their looks alone, boss designs definitely shouldn’t be ignored. With that being said though, there are still a select few bosses featured in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers who are much more detailed and visually interesting than the rest, and it’s these designs that this list is going to take a closer look at today.

Blight Weaver
A Grotesque Creature With A Plethora Of Deadly Weapons Attached To Its Body
It feels as though the developers took a lot of inspiration from the Resident Evil series when creating some of the more monstrous boss enemies, as this giant centipede enemy is one who would perfectly slot into one of those games based on its appearance. With a collection of arms stretching out from its body, including two giant cleavers which can slice up a regular human in mere seconds, the Blight Weaver is truly horrifying from a visual standpoint, with the design doing a great job at giving players a taste of the brutal combat encounter they’re about to be a part of.
The main reason this boss design stands out so much, though, is because of how grotesque and distorted it is, with pounds of flesh and dangling limbs covering the entire body of the centipede, along with the host himself, who can be seen emerging over the top. It’s incredibly creative, and the perfect representation of just how damaging the Feathering Disease can truly be.

Liu Cheng’en
This Ghoulish General’s Design Is Packed Full Of Details
It’s pretty clear from Liu Cheng’en’s appearance that he is a warrior who has seen his fair share of grizzly battles. While he is clearly human on the surface, the choice to give him pale white skin presents him as somewhat of a ghoulish figure who has returned from the dead to seek revenge on those who wronged him. At the same time though, the giant feathered ornaments that he carries on his back also provide some traditionalism to the overall design.

It’s also very hard to ignore the Ming General’s dead facial expressions and eyes, giving him a very eerie vibe that players can feel just from a quick glance. This design earns bonus points for being able to convey some of the bosses’ background through the appearance alone, and while the developers may have gone further with this by adding in some extra medals or decorations, it’s still a real feast for the eyes nonetheless.

Monstrous Toddler
Talk About Creepy, This Sinister Entity Looks Terrifying Up-Close
The Monstrous Toddler is a boss that looks like it was ripped straight out of some sort of edlritch horror novel, as its appearance is full of disturbing imagery and body horror that can give even the most seasoned horror veterans the creeps. Aside from its face, which includes a large gaping hole at the center, the most notable aspect of this boss’s design is the giant spiked blades that reach out from its arms. These deadly decorations ensure that players are aware right off the bat that this is not a monster to be trifled with, especially considering it’s more than happy to use these dangerous weapons to its advantage in the middle of combat.
The long flowing gray hair that trickles down its neck indicates that this was one somehow a regular human, which only makes its grotesque appearance all the more sinister and spine-chilling. This design may not be too over the top or flashy, but it really doesn’t need to be, as it still contains plenty of small details and ornaments that go a long way in raising its fear factor.

Fierce Tiger Sovereign
As If Regular Tigers Weren’t Already Intimidating Enough
While it would have been easy enough to include a tiger as a boss and then call it a day, the developers instead decided to get a little creative when coming up with the design of this ferocious animal. To achieve this, they made sure to keep the animal’s most prominent features, primarily its snarling face and glossy head of fur, while also having its hands and jaw be partly decayed, making it look like a kind of zombified tiger that has only recently risen from a deep slumber.
Despite it being much smaller than many of the other bosses seen in the game, the Fierce Tiger still manages to be a pretty memorable encounter thanks to its gory appearance. Seeing the boss extending its jaw to exaggerated proportions in order to let out a deadly scream is just one of the many attacks that make full use of this unique design scheme. Though it would have been even more horrifying to see even more of its flesh being torn off, that doesn’t take away from how eye-catching this boss’s appearance remains to be up-close.

Feathered Priest
A Priest Who Has Mutated Beyond Recognition
While there are many people across the land of Shu who have turned into hideous monsters, it’s pretty clear that this unfortunate priest had it worse than most. The man himself is now completely unrecognizable thanks to the bright red bubbling flesh covering his body, alongside the giant golden mask that conceals his face. In order to call back to his role as a former priest though, he also carries around a staff which is twice his size when in combat.

Another very notable aspect of this boss’s appearance are the glowing red eyes which are able to pierce through smoke and mist, making players feel like they’re constantly being watched no matter how fast they move around the environment. Seeing this monstrosity first hand makes for a pretty gruesome sight, striking fear into players before they even start the battle.
2
Perfect Bride Chimera
A Deadly Swordswoman With A Demon To Accompany Her
Creepy, terrifying, and extremely unnerving, The Princess Bride Chimera has one of the most effective designs in the game, and it’s all because of how it manages to blend demonic imagery with an already dangerous human. The Perfect Bride herself dons a traditional sleek red cloth along with two blades that she carries with her at all times. If players look closely, they’ll also be able to see some pretty gruesome details that add a lot to the design’s appeal.
For example, the boss has a bandage wrapped around their eyes while blood can be seen trickling down from underneath. Not only that, they also have a giant disturbing demon that has sprouted out from their back, and that will linger over their shoulder like a watchful guardian for the remainder of the fight. It’s a great bit of horror imagery that feels like a perfect blend between humanity and the world of demons.

Feathery Ambition
The Final Boss’ Striking Design Is One That Lingers In The Mind Long After The Credits Roll
Considering Xuanyangzi is the final boss of the game, it makes sense that the developers would try and give him a memorable appearance, but it’s fair to say they went above and beyond to ensure this guy is as terrifying as possible. With an elongated neck stretching out of his body and his lengthy arms dangling over the sides of his torso, there’s just enough here to make out that this boss was once a human, though with his body now grossly mutated, along with giant wings spreading out from his back, it’s also clear that it’s humanity was discarded a long time ago.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg, as upon closer inspection, he also has a bunch of sharp roots poking out from his body alongside some rather disturbing tentacles, which all feed into the whole body horror visual style that the game is going for. It’s pretty clear at numerous points in the game that the developers were trying to see what they could conjure up by fusing human anatomy with monsters, but they truly struck gold with this one, which is so eerie and disturbing that it will linger on in the player’s mind long after they beat the game.
