My Hero Academia Has Ended, But Horikoshi Has Already Revealed Its Replacement

My Hero Academia is, undoubtedly, one of the best manga series of recent years, and it is also one of the most successful ones. Having begun serialization over a decade ago, My Hero Academia started incredibly strong, and it wasn’t too long before the series was considered to be the most exciting up-and-coming series. After it received an anime, My Hero Academia quickly became a sensation and that popularity has been maintained to this day. At one point, My Hero Academia was easily the most popular manga in the whole world, and that just goes to show what a phenomenon it was.

Unfortunately, the series officially wrapped up in 2024, and even though it received some projects in 2025, fans know that the journey is well and truly over now. While My Hero Academia is over, Jump has received some other incredible series since, and it seems the perfect replacement for it is here alright. Kohei Horikoshi, the author of My Hero Academia, himself recommends to his fans a new manga that has taken over since its end, and as many avid manga readers would be aware already, it is none other than Ichi the Witch.

Since My Hero Academia ended, many new interesting manga series have officially been released, and one of them is Ichi the Witch, also known as Madan no Ichi. This manga has been a sensation since it dropped. As fans know, My Hero Academia ended in September 2024, and interestingly enough, that’s when Ichi the Witch began its run in Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga is written by Osamu Nishi, while the art is taken care of by Shiro Usazaki, who is rather well-known for drawing Act Age.

Ichi the Witch is 1 year old now, and it seems the manga is only getting more popular with each passing chapter. The first volume of Ichi the Witch dropped on January 4, 2025, and to the surprise of no fan, Horikoshi was quick to recommend it to the fans. Horikoshi’s recommendation opened this manga up to many My Hero Academia fans, and that certainly elevated its popularity.

Horikoshi’s recommendation aside, fans know very well that My Hero Academia has a worthy successor in Ichi the Witch. The protagonists of the two series are rather similar, both in terms of appearance and personality, and at the same time, fans also know that the power systems in the two worlds are somewhat alike as well. While Quirks exist in the world of My Hero Academia, there’s magic in Ichi the Witch, which comes from defeating Majiks.

So far, Ichi the Witch has enjoyed quite a lot of incredible sales and it goes without saying that if this continues, it won’t be too long before it receives a new anime. However, it won’t be in 2026. Ichi the Witch is still around 50s when it comes to chapter count, and for a good anime adaptation, it needs to have at least 100 or something close. Fans should expect the announcement of Ichi the Witch anime in 2026, and the adaptation to be out in 2027. Until then, the manga has time to boost its popularity even more, and that’s certainly exciting, to say the least.

Question: Are you considering doing another manga? Horikoshi: Yes, I’m already in the concept stage. Luckily, there is something I still want to do that I couldn’t do with MHA, so I’m hoping to channel that feeling into this. When I announce my next series, I hope it will be in Weekly Shonen Jump. So, I’m working on the concept now, thinking about how I want to challenge myself to Jump one more time.

For a successful anime adaptation, it would be best to give the manga more time to accumulate more content. Once it has enough in store for a proper adaptation, fans can only hope that a good studio picks it up and delivers a solid adaptation. Under the right conditions, Ichi the Witch has the potential to be the next big hit, and maybe even the best next-gen anime that fans will remember for years upon years. Of course, it’s too early to decide that, but the signs are looking incredibly promising and with the blessing of Kohei Horikoshi himself, fans know that Ichi the Witch can go on to be a series that will be remembered for years to come.
