A recent Elder Scrolls 6 rumor has claimed that Bethesda is aiming to release the game in 2027, and if that’s true, it’s highly unlikely that we will get Fallout 5 this decade. The franchise’s popularity has always meant that Fallout 5 is inevitable, but fans don’t have to just assume that it’s on the way. Fallout 5 has already been confirmed by Todd Howard as the studio’s next game after The Elder Scrolls 6.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was first revealed at E3 2018 and there is still nothing official on the game beyond a brief teaser trailer. Instead of diving right into Elder Scrolls 6 development, Bethesda took a detour to make Starfield, an open world sci-fi RPG that had a very strong start but hasn’t enjoyed the same longevity as ES or Fallout. Bethesda hasn’t completely left Starfield behind and is still working on DLC for the game, as well as a rumored PS5 port, but it’s believed that the majority of the studio is hard at work on Elder Scrolls 6.
We don’t know for sure when Elder Scrolls 6 will hit the market. Previously, it’d been suggested that The Elder Scrolls 6 release window would be in 2028, though a more recent rumor says that ES6 will potentially launch in 2027. Regardless of when it launches, if it’s not 2026, then there is virtually no chance that Fallout 5 hits store shelves this decade. This is likely a devastating revelation for Fallout fans as the last main series game was Fallout 4 all the way back in 2015. The way things are looking, fans can expect a minimum of 15 years between Fallout 4 and 5, but the wait will likely be even longer than that by the time it’s all said and done.
Bethesda Can Make the Fallout 5 Wait Easier With Remasters
Elder Scrolls fans have been waiting for Elder Scrolls 6 since Skyrim launched in 2011, and so Bethesda fans are used to waiting huge chunks of time between releases. One way Bethesda has made the wait for Elder Scrolls 6 a little easier is by releasing new and improved versions of Skyrim alongside spin-off games and, most recently, Oblivion Remastered. Oblivion Remastered‘s shadow drop was one of the biggest surprises of the year, with the remastered game earning a great deal of praise from fans and critics alike. With the wait for Fallout 5 set to be just as excruciating, hopefully Bethesda helps tide fans over with remasters of those games.
It’s long been leaked that a Fallout 3 remaster is waiting in the wings, and it would make a great deal of sense to follow that up with a New Vegas remaster as well. Some rumors suggest that there may even be a New Vegas sequel in the works at a different studio that will come before Fallout 5, but that remains to be seen. The safer bet is that remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas will eventually be released, which will give fans something to do while they wait for Fallout 5.
There’s also the Fallout TV show to take into account. Fallout‘s first season was a big hit, and Season 2 looks just as exciting, with the show’s characters making their way to the aforementioned New Vegas. If the rumored Fallout remasters are released, they, along with the TV series, could go a long way in making the wait for Fallout 5 easier.
