There are eight unlockable characters in Shape of Dreams, and they’re all powerful in their own right. Much like in other character or class-based roguelikes, players will need to put in quite a bit of effort if they want to unlock every hero in this game.
This guide covers every Shape of Dreams character available as of launch. If you’re having trouble getting one of them, we’ve also included quick guides on how you can best unlock each Traveler.

Every character in Shape of Dreams features a unique playstyle as well as a distinct set of character-specific constellations. Each one will feel significantly different from the other in terms of gameplay and builds.
Some of these characters are fairly easy to unlock, while others require a bit more effort. Here’s how to get each of them.
How to Get Yubar in Shape of Dreams
Yubar is arguably the easiest character to unlock in Shape of Dreams. All you need to do is get 600 Dream Dust, the blue currency you get by breaking crystals or dismantling Memories/Essences. All you really need to do is play the game, and you’ll get him eventually.
How to Get Vesper in Shape of Dreams
Like Yubar, Vesper is also extremely easy to unlock. However, you’ll need a bit of luck to get him. All you need to do is reach the Starry Sky biome, which is one of the few potential biomes you can get once you reach the third stage of a run. Much like Yubar, all you have to do to get Vesper is play the game. Vesper will likely be the first character players unlock first, and thanks to his innate tankiness, he is the perfect Traveler for Shape of Dreams beginners.
How to Get Aurena in Shape of Dreams
Aurena requires players to heal 25,000 health, either to themselves or to their allies. The easiest way to do this is to use Vesper, as one of his passive abilities lets him heal himself. However, 25,000 health is still a big number, which means you’ll have to play a lot of games as Vesper before you can unlock Aurena.\
Since Vesper has built-in healing, you won’t need to rely on healing shrines and Memories/Essences to make progress toward Aurena’s unlock. Still, you’ll want to use those to speed up the process.
How to Get Nachia in Shape of Dreams
Nachia is another character whose only true unlock requirement is persistence. To get her, you need to beat Belphomet, the boss in the first biome, a total of 20 times. You can do this by rushing Belphomet then quitting to the lobby screen after beating him. Don’t forget to pick up the Stardust he drops.
One good way to do this is to play Mist. She has an ability unlock challenge that requires you to beat Belphomet within two minutes of starting a run. The best way to get that ability and make good progress for unlocking Nachia is to use the Burning Bloodlust Constellation, which gives you 16 bonus Attack Damage until the end of the second stage. Use this with other AD-boosting Constellations as well as the Fleche and Parry abilities.
How to Get Bismuth in Shape of Dreams
This is where things get tricky. To get Bismuth, you need to get over 900 Movement Speed and maintain that speed for at least three seconds. There are many ways to do this, but in our case, we used two Memories:
- Immolation: Ignite yourself, consuming 12% of your max health over 3.5 seconds. While burning, your movement speed increases, and you deal damage per second to nearby enemies.
- Corrosive Trail: Leave a trail of gas behind you as you move for the next four seconds. This increases your movement speed, and the gas poisons enemies.
Get either of these skills to level 3, then just activate them simultaneously. You’ll unlock Bismuth by the time the skills expire. Alternatively, try the following:
- Essence of Sulfur: Memory damage is converted to Fire damage, and you deal more Fire damage over time.
- Essence of Quicksilver: Gain movement speed when you deal Fire damage or cast the Memory this Essence is attached to.
Improve Quicksilver’s quality by getting more copies or using Chaos blessings, then use a character with low cooldowns or charge-based abilities like Aurena or Mist with Fleche. Mist’s Light as a Feather Constellation gives you +12% movement speed or +18% if your health is over 90%, but in order to use this Constellation, you may have to level Mist up some more.
How to Unlock Shell in Shape of Dreams
Shell is the most complicated character to unlock — you need to find three small souls and put them inside a wooden doll. Not only is his unlock description vague, but the entire process is luck-based, and you have only one shot per run to get things right.
First, you need to reach the Whispering Lotus Plateau biome, which is one of the possible biomes you can get on the third stage. This is a Japanese-inspired biome with floating swords, swordsmen, and warriors of a similar type. Once you get here, you’ll then need to find three souls scattered throughout the entire stage.
Before you enter a new room/arena, hover your cursor over an available map node. If the node says that there’s a small soul there, get to it immediately. Defeat the enemies inside, then look for a red soul floating somewhere in the arena. Pick it up, then repeat this process two more times.
After you collect all three souls, you’ll then need to reach the boss arena of the stage. Before you head up the steps, you should be able to find Shell’s body to the left. Interact with the body, then you will unlock Shell permanently.
You absolutely need to find all three souls in a single run to unlock Shell. Take care not to enter Hunter-occupied zones too many times, or else you’ll get overwhelmed.
