There are several obstacles throughout Lumiose City that can only be destroyed if you use specific methods. In addition to purple goop and boulders, players may find themselves wondering how to deal with thorny vines in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
Though some players think you need to use Cut to remove thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A (like in previous Pokemon games), the answer is actually much more obvious. Like the patches of slime or boulders that block the way across Lumiose City, to remove thorns, Pokemon Legends Z-A players must use an attack that the vines are weak to.
How to Cut Thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Destroy Vines in Legends Z-A With Specific Moves
To destroy thorns, Pokemon Legends Z-A players must use any Fire-type attack against them. If you did not pick Tepig as your starter pokemon in Pokemon Legends Z-A, you will have to catch one and level it up until it can learn Fire moves.
- One pokemon with Fire moves that you can get early is Fletchling. Though this pokemon starts out with flying and normal moves, it will gain the ability to learn Ember around level 10. You can catch Fletchling throughout the city, but particularly in Wild Zone 1.
- Another Fire pokemon that can be caught early is Litleo. The earliest place to get Litleo is in Wild Zone 3, which you will encounter as part of the main story progression.
When you run into a patch of brambles, summon one of your Fire pokemon and use any of its Fire moves on the thorns to burn them away. If there are several thorny vines close to each other, the attack will destroy multiple at once.
You will have to wait a few seconds for your pokemon’s fire attack to recharge before you can continue to remove thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
What Happens When You Remove Thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A?
Like removing boulders or clearing purple goop, your pokemon will gain a small amount of XP when they destroy thorns in Pokemon Legends Z-A. This XP is not shared amongst the party like battle XP is. Additionally, you may find special items hidden in the brambles.
If a glowing red, purple, or yellow beam peeks out from beneath the vines, Pokemon Legends Z-A players will find an item of the corresponding rarity beneath the brambles. As you journey through Lumiose City, keep an eye out for patches of thorns with items hidden inside – even if you don’t find anything particularly notable, your pokemon will still gain some XP for destroying vines in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
