Pokemon Legends Z-A has lots of species that roam around Lumiose in search of a peaceful way of life, or a trainer to shape them into unstoppable winning machines. Such is the case of Larvitar, one of the most sought-after Pokemon in the series.
In every game, Larvitar is a little tricky to find, and in Legends Z-A, the tradition remains. This guide will help players find and evolve Larvitar into its ultimate shape, Tyranitar, and how to maximize its potential thanks to Mega Evolution.
Where to Find Larvitar in Pokemon Legends Z-A
In Pokemon Legends Z-A, Larvitar can be found during the day in certain spots in Lumiose, and during the evenings in Wild Zone 15. If players are already skilled at using the Roll/Vault combo, they can try to access the rooftop of Vert Sector 2 to catch a this Pokemon early (or an Alpha Larvitar if they’re lucky).
To gain access to the rooftop area where Larvitar Spawns, follow these instructions:
- Travel to Vert Plaza (Wild Area 2).
- Climb the stairs and follow the park path towards a ladder on the right side (check the map location above).
- Dodge the Bellsprouts and climb the green roof, go to the boxes on the opposite side, and climb on top.
- Now, stick to the border and carefully move the right stick up to the edge of the collision block.
- Now press and release Y/B while moving the stick forward. This should make the trainer roll and fall on the opposite roof.
- Follow the path to Larvitar or Alpha Larvitar.
If players are having trouble accessing the rooftop, they can wait until clearing Main Mission 16, when Rotom Glide becomes available and they will be able to access this place with ease.
How to Evolve Larvitar in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Larvitar evolves into Pupitar at level 30, and then evolves into Tyranitar at level 55 without any special conditions. But that’s not the end of the line for this Rock/Dark-type Pokemon. Tyranitar holding the Mega Stone called Tyranitarite, evolves into Mega Tyranitar during combat.
The Tyranitarite can be found by completing Main Mission Nº38: A Rogue Mega Tyranitar, which doesn’t happen until late in the game. Still, with a BST (Base Stat Total) of 600, Tyranitar is considered a Pseudo-Legendary, and it’s a strong Pokemon to have ready for Mega Evolution.
When Tyranitar evolves into Mega Tyranitar it gains a boost of 30 to Atk, 40 to Defense, 20 to Sp. Defense, and 10 to Speed, turning its BST into 700 (same as Mega Dragonite). This stat distribution makes it quite tanky, but players should reinforce its Attack and HP with EV, and a little bit of Speed if they want (252/252/6) to make it the perfect physical attacker.
Mega Tyranitar’s ideal moveset includes Crunch, Heavy Slam, Earthquake (or Rock Blast), and Giga Impact. Players can also add some versatility to the mix and coverage by teaching it Outrage (which is also a great way to counter Mega Dragonite).
