Blackbird Interactive has announced that it has bought back the rights of Hardspace: Shipbreaker from publisher Focus Interactive.

The sci-fi simulation game, notable for its themes of labor exploitation, initially released in early access in 2020 before launching in 2022 on PC and console.

In a Steam post addressed to its community, the developer shared that an agreement had been reached with its former publishing partner to reacquire full ownership of the Hardspace IP.

“As our studio begins this exciting new chapter, Hardspace is going to become a core part of our business strategy going forward,” stated Blackbird Interactive’s comms director Steven Messner, confirming that multiple Hardspace projects are currently in development, which suggests that there may be games spanning different genres within the game’s universe rather than just a sequel.

For players who own Hardspace: Shipbreaker, the new ownership will also be reflected through a small update, including updated splash screens, logos, and privacy policies around the collection and use of private data.

While it is confirmed that Focus Entertainment will no longer be affiliated with Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Messner added, “Let’s not mince words, Hardspace: Shipbreaker wouldn’t be what it is today without [Focus Entertainment]. We’re eternally grateful for their partnership and willingness to work with us so we could take ownership of the Hardspace IP.”

The announcement also coincides with the pre-registration for the LYNX Pioneer Program, where the Hardspace community can sign up for the chance to access exclusive early playtests of future Hardspace projects (and other original IP from Blackbird Interactive), behind-the-scenes development updates, and more.
