Summary
- Final Destination: Bloodlines reinvigorated the franchise with rave reviews and box office success.
- Every Final Destination movie is in HBO’s global top 10, with Bloodlines leading.
- The franchise is only loosely connected, and can generally be watched in almost any order.
Plenty of horror movies feature their characters facing certain death, but usually in the form of a monster or a serial killer. Only the Final Destination movies have their unlucky characters facing death itself, often with no escape from its clutches. It’s why the franchise has had so much staying power for 25 years.
This year, Final Destination: Bloodlines reinvigorated the franchise following a 14-year break between movies. The latest entry garnered rave reviews and was a box office success, garnering an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and raking in $285 million. It seems that horror fans have decided to revisit Final Destination after its latest success.
The Final Destination Movies Are Dominating The Streaming Charts
All six Final Destination movies are in HBO’s top 10
According to the latest information from Flixpatrol (as of August 6th), every single Final Destination movie has found its way into HBO’s global top 10. Final Destination: Bloodlines takes the top spot, which makes the most sense with it being the most recent entry. Perhaps fittingly, the number two spot is occupied by the original Final Destination, with Final Destination 5 sitting at number three (if you’re familiar with the franchise, then seeing these movies so close together is actually kind of funny). Final Destination 2 and its infamous opening scene featuring a log truck is at number 6, while Final Destination 3 and The Final Destination (arguably the weakest entries) sit at nine and 10, respectively.
Final Destination: Bloodlines, having only recently hit the streaming service, seems to have sparked an interest in the rest of the movies. Final Destination has always been an interesting franchise, as there is some connective tissue between movies, but they can also largely be watched individually without even having to adhere to release order. While the first four movies are almost exactly the same in terms of plot structure, the fifth movie introduces the idea that a person can steal someone’s remaining lifespan by killing them. Almost every movie also features an appearance from the late Tony Todd as mortician William Bludworth, who seems to have a deeper understanding of how Death works. Todd made his last on-screen appearance in Final Destination: Bloodlines, which also served as something of an origin story for his character. Todd’s last spoken lines in the movie were improvised on set to serve as a farewell.
Outside of the Final Destination movies, it seems like HBO viewers are in a horror mood, as two other recent entries in the genre also made it onto the top ten. The recent video game adaptation Until Dawn sits at number seven, followed by indie thriller Bed Rest starring Melissa Barrera. Until Dawn, directed by David F. Sandberg and written and produced by Gary Dauberman, shares some similarities with Final Destination, in that it focuses on a lot of very inventive and gory kills for its characters. It just keeps doing them to the same characters over and over as time resets.
Another Final Destination sequel is yet to be announced, but considering just how well-received (and financially successful) Bloodlines was, it seems fairly pre-determined. It’s almost like it’s meant to happen, and nothing anyone can do will stop it from happening, but time will tell.
The Final Destination movies are available to stream on HBO Max.
