The anime adaptation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Part 7: Steel Ball Run is scheduled to come out next year and Warner Bros recently released a teaser trailer that gave fans a brief look at this highly anticipated project. The art and the animation look quite solid, but the most intriguing part of this announcement was the reveal of all the Japanese voice actors who were chosen to portray its cast of characters.
Of course, David Production has done an excellent job at casting voice actors for all the previous JoJo parts, and this will definitely be no exception. Nevertheless, some fans may still be wondering who these performers are and where exactly they have heard their voices before, so these are some notorious examples of their work that prove they’re more than ready to bring these iconic Steel Ball Run characters to life.
Shogo Sakata As Johnny Joestar
Other Roles: Aki In Chainsaw Man, Majestic In My Hero Academia
Johnny Joestar, the main character of Steel Ball Run and the Part’s designated JoJo, will be played by Shogo Sakata, an up-and-coming voice actor with just a few voice roles under his name. He has been working in the industry since 2017, but he got his first big break when he was cast to play Aki Hayakawa in MAPPA’s animated adaptation of Chainsaw Man. Curiously enough, this means that two members of that show’s cast have portrayed a JoJo, seeing as Farouz Ai (the voice of Power) also voiced Jolyne Cujoh in Stone Ocean. Shortly before that, Sakata also had a minor role as the Pro Hero Enma Kannagi (aka Majestic) in My Hero Academia.
Based on the only voice line he had in the trailer, his youthful and energetic voice seems to fit Johnny perfectly, but he definitely has a tall task ahead of him, considering that this character has a lot of development and ends up being quite complex. JoJo fans were surprised that Yuki Kaji (who had previously voiced Johnny in All Star Battle and Eyes of Heaven) was not chosen to reprise this role for the anime, but it’s worth pointing out that he had already voiced Koichi Hirose in the animated adaptation of Diamond is Unbreakable, so it’s possible David Production just wanted to cast someone new for the role.
Yohei Azakami As Gyro Zeppeli
Other Roles: Deathpierce In The Seven Deadly Sins, Guel Jeturk In The Witch from Mercury
Gyro Zeppeli, Johnny’s close ally and the deuteragonist of Steel Ball Run, will be played by Yohei Azakami, and he seems like a perfect fit for this role. He has a raspy and deep voice that fits Gyro’s initial “lone cowboy persona” (as can be heard in the trailer when he says his iconic catchphrase, “Nyo-Ho!”), but he’s also capable of switching to a goofier and more lighthearted tone, which will be perfect for Gyro’s silly antics and legendary comedic scenes.
Azakami is a very prolific voice actor who has been working in the industry for over a decade, but he was more well-known for playing secondary characters, meaning that this will be one of the biggest roles of his entire career. Anime fans may have heard him in shows like The Seven Deadly Sins, where he voiced Deathpierce or Aggretsuko, where he voiced Himuro, but his popularity skyrocketed after he voiced fan favorite Guel Jeturk in the 2022 Mobile Suit Gundam series, The Witch from Mercury.
Kaito Ishikawa As Diego Brando
Other Roles: Jiji In Dandadan, Iida In My Hero Academia, Genos In One Punch Man
There’s no denying that Takehito Koyasu as Dio Brando was a generational performance that had an impact on the entire anime landscape. Most JoJo fans were expecting him to come back to voice Diego Brando in the Steel Ball Run anime since, after all, he had already voiced Dio’s alternate-universe counterpart in All Star Battle and Eyes of Heaven. While this didn’t end up happening, fans can’t really complain because another legendary voice actor was chosen for this role instead.
Kaito Ishikawa is one of the most famous members of the Steel Ball Run cast, as he’s an extremely talented and experienced voice actor who has worked in numerous popular anime. He recently showcased his impressive range when he played Jin Enjoji/Evil Eye in Dandadan, but anime fans have most likely heard his voice in other shows, like My Hero Academia, where he voiced Iida Tenya, or One Punch Man, where he voices Genos. He even worked on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in the past, seeing as he voiced Sale in Part 5, Vento Aureo. Needless to say, Ishikawa has more than enough experience and vocal range to bring this beloved anti-hero to life and, based on Diego’s lines in the teaser trailer, he even sounds a lot like Takehito Koyasu.
Rie Takahashi As Lucy Steel
Other Roles: Ai Hoshino In Oshi No Ko, Emilia In Re:Zero, Megumin In KonoSuba
The only female member of this cast (so far) is Rie Takahasi, who will voice Lucy Steel. Funnily enough, she may also be the single most famous voice performer in this project, because her career blew up in the past few years after she voiced a bunch of incredibly popular female characters from incredibly popular shows, like Emilia, the iconic deuteragonist of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, and Megumin, the explosive wizard of KonoSuba.
Takahashi is not only a talented voice actress, but a very talented singer as well, which she effectively proved when she played Ai Hoshino, the titular character of Oshi no Ko. Her voice work as Lucy Steel sounds great so far, since she has the vocal range to make her sound young and innocent enough, but this is a character that will have a massive role in the story, so Takahashi may end up delivering one of the absolute best performances in the history of the JoJo anime.
Kenta Miyake As Steven Steel
Other Roles: Avdol In Stardust Crusaders, All Might In My Hero Academia, Scar In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fortunately for JoJo fans, another legendary voice actor was cast in the role of Steven Steel — the promoter of the titular Steel Ball Run race — and is someone who has prior experience working on this series. Kenta Miyake had already delivered an impeccable performance as Muhammad Avdol in the animated adaptation of Stardust Crusaders, who quickly became one of Part 3’s most iconic and beloved characters, and he’ll be using his deep and powerful voice once again to bring Steven Steel to life.
Avdol is not even the only prominent voice role in his extensive career, because he has also voiced All Might in My Hero Academia and Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, both of which are often considered the best characters of their respective shows. Similarly to Lucy, Steven starts off as a very one-note and slimy person, but he eventually grows into quite a multi-layered character. Needless to say, Miyake has the acting chops to portray him during some of the more emotional and shocking scenes from the second half of the story, and he’ll definitely be able to convince anime viewers that Steven Steel is actually a great character and person.
