Beloved RPG Franchise With 85+ Critic Score Is Getting a Surprise Sequel

Square Enix has announced Octopath Traveler 0, the third mainline entry in its beloved RPG franchise. Set before the events of the original Octopath Traveler, the upcoming title is scheduled to debut on PC and consoles on December 4, 2025.

Co-developed by Square Enix and Acquire, the first Octopath Traveler was one of the highest-rated Switch JRPGs of 2018 and ended up receiving similar praise once it was eventually ported to other consoles and PC in the years that followed. Octopath Traveler 2 managed to slightly exceed its level of acclaim, as underlined by its “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic, derived from an average score of 85 and a 95% reviewer recommendation rate, placing it in the 95th percentile of all games on the aggregator platform.

Octopath Traveler 2 has eight playable characters, but they are not all equal.

Square Enix is now following up on this duo with Octopath Traveler 0, announced during the July 31 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. The event saw the publisher debut a brief reveal trailer for the upcoming JRPG, which is set to feature 30 recruitable characters, eight-character battle parties, and a wide variety of epic boss fights. Like its name suggests, this threequel is actually a prequel, with an original story that once again takes players to the fictional continent of Orsterra while centering on “revenge and restoration” unfolding before the events of the first series entry.

Octopath Traveler 0 Is Based on a Mobile Game, But Isn’t a Traditional Port

Octopath Traveler 0 follows a rarely seen development model: it is a console/PC game based on a mobile title, yet not a direct port. Specifically, it draws from the mobile spin-off Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, originally released in Japan in October 2020 before making its way to the West in July 2022. The mobile game’s premise is expanded with new combat options, additional story elements, and a more streamlined narrative. How exactly Square Enix has streamlined the original plot remains unclear.

In a series first, Octopath Traveler 0 will include a town-building mode, which allows players to help restore their ruined hometown. Path Actions from Octopath Traveler 2 are also set to return, enabling unique NPC interactions based on the current party composition. The game will additionally support save data transfers from earlier titles, which are said to provide some form of reward.
