Some of the most important players in this story arc are the New Giant Warrior Pirates, one of the pirate crews who pledged their allegiance to Luffy after the events in Dressrosa.
Previously, only the captain, Hajrudin, had a proper introduction, but now each member of the crew can be identified with a name and role. Within the last few chapters of the manga, there’s been a lot to learn about these pirates, and as the story progresses, more is sure to be uncovered. In the meantime, this topic will share a brief rundown of these characters.
1
Road
A Fanboy Navigator
- Manga Debut: Chapter 898, Cover Page
- Anime Debut: Episode 836
The Straw Hats’ adventures in Elbaf have a rocky start when half the crew disappears after their celebration. However, it doesn’t take long to discover that the perpetrator is Road, the navigator of the New Giant Warrior Pirates. In private, he’s prone to role-playing as a powerful god, kidnapping humans to live in his diorama like pets. However, in public, he’s incredibly shy and awkward.
Despite his quirks, he’s actually a skilled navigator and has been creating sea charts since childhood. While there haven’t been many examples of his skills, it can be assumed that he led the crew to Ohara on their mission to retrieve the research left behind by the archaeologists. He’s faithful to his crew even though he often receives physical punishments due to his perverted and odd behavior.
2
Goldberg
The Easygoing Chef
- Manga Debut: Chapter 899, Cover Page
- Anime Debut: Episode 836
Goldberg is the chef of the crew. Not much is known about his abilities, but he’s an easygoing and kind individual who is open to teaching and helping others. For the most part, he doesn’t take the surrounding problems too seriously and often presents a more practical approach to the situation. There is a limit, however, and he won’t hesitate to take action if someone crosses the line.
As Hajrudin’s childhood friend, he has one of the closest relationships with the captain and trusts him completely. Although he’s naturally very mellow, Goldberg is still quite strong, wielding a mace and Nash, a special shield that was turned into a homie through Big Mom’s powers. Nash is able to adjust his size in response to incoming attacks. Goldberg also helped in the recovery of the books in Ohara and their transfer to Elbaf.
3
Stansen
The Strong And Sturdy Shipwright
- Manga Debut: Chapter 500
- Anime Debut: Episode 394
Although he was recently introduced, Stenson made an appearance before the time skip. He was one of the victims being sold on the Sabaody Archipelago until Rayleigh and Luffy helped free everyone in the auction house. Ever since, he’s been extremely grateful to both of them for saving his life. His current role with the New Giant Warrior Pirates is shipwright, and he repairs and maintains their ship, the Nagalfar.
Stenson didn’t necessarily grow up with the others, but he’s still quite close to them and trusts Hajrudin completely. As a warrior of Elbaf, he’s incredibly strong and durable, which is proven when the crew falls from the Sun Realm to the Underworld. He was able to laugh off the near-death experience easily. Although he was trained with a sword while he was young, his primary weapon now is a huge hammer.
4
Gerd
A No-Nonsense Doctor
- Manga Debut: Chapter 866
- Anime Debut: Episode 836
Despite being the doctor of the crew, Gerd is completely fine with displays of violence, and she often resorts to physical punishment when interacting with those she disapproves of, specifically Road, who often does inappropriate things. When Luffy accidentally hurts Loki while the latter is recovering, Gerd gives her approval while actively treating the giant. She wields a single-bladed axe, and she’s strong enough to incapacitate Road in one hit.
Gerd is another of Hajrudin’s childhood friends and has been supporting him since they were young. Outside of her medical talents, she’s also able to communicate to animals and has a hobby of creating human-sized clothing. She was recently introduced, but she’s appeared in the story before as a friend of Big Mom in a flashback. She’s since turned her back on the Emperor for her crimes against the giants.
5
Hajrudin
A Captain Who Could Be King
- Manga Debut: Chapter 706
- Anime Debut: Episode 639
As the captain of the New Giant Warrior Pirates, Hajrudin was the first to pledge his loyalty to Luffy after seeing his actions in Dressrosa. Originally, he’d entered the competition to claim the Flame-Flame Fruit for himself as a means of furthering his goal of becoming Elbaf’s king. Although he’s technically a prince, his commoner blood prevents him from being recognized as a legitimate heir. However, that doesn’t stop him from striving to be recognized.
Due to his experiences as a child, Hajrudin is accepting of everyone he meets and doesn’t let preexisting prejudice bother him, which is seen when Road initially opposes his loyalty to Luffy. He’s cordial and honorable, but his attitude changes toward his half-brother Loki, whom he believes killed their father. His anger and resentment toward Loki stem from their childhood, leading to a terrible relationship.
