Warner Bros. and Legendary have announced A Minecraft Movie 2. The sequel is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. That’s a couple months after the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie comes out.
Assuming the schedules hold, A Minecraft Movie 2 will come to theaters on the same day that The Simpsons Movie 2 arrives in July 2027.
The announcement of the sequel is no surprise at all. The original film, released in April 2025, made more than $950 million worldwide. It’s the No. 2 highest-grossing video game movie of all time, and the No. 69 highest-grossing movie of all time for all films ever released.
Back in April, just after the movie was released, the top bosses at Warner Bros. said a sequel was all but a sure thing and all that needed to happen was for a deal to be finalized.
Original director Jared Hess is coming back to direct and co-write the sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. We don’t yet know, however, if the main cast from the first movie may return, including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
Hess previously told Deadline that making a sequel would be “so much fun,” adding that the world of Minecraft is “expansive” and leaves open plenty of possibilities for more stories.
“There were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to,” he said. “I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.”
The sequel could focus on the character Alex, who was teased at the end of the film. Alex would be joined by Jack Black’s character, Steve, in a potential sequel, Hess said.
The announcement of A Minecraft Movie 2 comes just days after Warner Bros. movie bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy signed contract extensions with the film company. A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Weapons were some of their breakout hits in 2025, but the past 12 months also had a string of misses, too, including Mickey 17, The Alto Knights, and Joker: Folie a Deux. WBD top boss David Zaslav was reportedly interviewing candidates to replace De Luca and Abdy prior to the pair signing a new deal to continue to lead the studio.
