The reason for their battle was Kizaru wanting to kill Vegapunk, but Luffy wanted to save him from this fate.
Their battle was a sight to behold, but Luffy came out on top this time. It shows how far Luffy has come when looking back at Marineford, where he wasn’t able to touch the Three Admirals. Now, Luffy’s newfound power even surprised Kizaru, who had to go toe-to-toe against him in order to survive.

Instead, he pointed all his anger and rage towards one man, Akainu, whom he wanted to kill. Whitebeard almost succeeded in killing him, but instead, he wounded him to a point that he wasn’t able to continue fighting for some time.
