Summary
- Devil Fruit abilities in One Piece are powerful but come with risks, making them unreliable in certain scenarios.
- Specific Devil Fruits like Perona’s Hollow Hollow Fruit and Pizarro’s Isle Isle Fruit can lead to self-endangerment.
- Robin’s Flower Flower Fruit, Fujitora’s Press Press Fruit, and Dark Dark Fruit are powerful but risky due to potential drawbacks.
Many of the Devil Fruit abilities seen in One Piece tend to be extremely powerful, but the owners of these fruits can’t just go around using them whenever they please, especially if they come with a dangerous set of risks that can harm the user or those around them. Most of the time, in order to ensure these abilities don’t end up being too overpowered, it will be emphasized that using these fruits can result in disastrous consequences if something were to go wrong, making them more of a last resort rather than a reliable ability that can be used casually.
In some cases, this can simply be due to the nature of the ability itself and how it works, but it can also come as a result of a fruit taking a long time to fully master before it can become safe to use. On the other hand, some Devil Fruits have such a glaring weakness that even trying to utilize them will put a giant target on the person’s back. Either way, it’s time to analyze why exactly the One Piece Devil Fruits listed below are some of the riskiest in the series, and how they can end up causing more harm than good if used incorrectly.
Hollow Hollow Fruit
Perona Can Sap A Person Of Their Positive Energy, So Long As They Have Any To Begin With
- Risk: Won’t Work On Pessimistic Targets
Perona’s Devil Fruit is pretty simple in the way it works, but while the gothic member of Gecko Moria’s pirate crew may have been more than happy to use it against the Straw Hats, she ended up getting a little too carried away when facing off against Usopp specifically. Usually, the ghosts that Perona summons will be able to sap a person’s energy until they enter a depressive state, making them easy targets. However, the ghost had no effect on Usopp, simply because he was already pessimistic to begin with.
In fact, when Perona decided to send four more ghosts to try and counter him, this ended up backfiring on her and removing her own energy in the process. This is an ability which is extremely risky to use against opponents that Perona is unfamiliar with, considering that if they are not someone who is filled with optimism and hope, then the user could end up putting herself in danger, since Perona by herself isn’t all that much of a fighter without her fruit ability.
Warp Warp Fruit
Without Full Mastery, This Fruit Can Be Tricky To Use
- Risk: Limited Range When Not Fully Mastered
The Warp Warp Fruit is an ability that has only been introduced to the story fairly recently, and while it may seem pretty straightforward on the surface, there are actually some small technicalities that can make it somewhat risky. In the blink of an eye, Von Augur is able to teleport himself and anyone he touches to a nearby location, but as the sniper himself admits, he can only move a short range until he fully masters the ability.
This means that while Von Augur might have the confidence that he can get his comrades out of a sticky situation, he could also end up becoming too overconfident, resulting in the getaway plan being ruined. So far, he has been able to put his fruit to good use, though considering he’s only been using it for a very short period of time, it’s definitely not the most reliable ability that the Blackbeard pirates have in their extensive arsenal.
Press Press Fruit
The Area Of Effect On This Ability Can Be Too Large To Handle
As someone who is able to control gravity through the use of his Devil Fruit, Fujitora can cause some serious damage when taking on a band of pirates, though sometimes, this can end up being too much damage. The area of effect of Fujitora’s abilities is extremely large, meaning it can be easy to get many of his comrades caught in the crossfire accidentally, especially if he decides to go all out and call down a meteorite to decimate an entire area.
Another reason this fruit is so risky is that it can end up making the situation much more dangerous than it needs to be if Fujitora is attacked while using it. For example, while levitating multiple buildings or pieces of debris, everything in the sky will end up shooting back to the surface if Fujitora is struck, which could result in some nasty injuries that the Admiral would rather have avoided.
Flower Flower Fruit
Robin Won’t Remain Immune To Any Damage She Receives While Sprouting New Limbs
- Risk: Pain Inflicted On Limbs Reflects On The User’s Body
Over the course of the One Piece story, Robin has been able to crush and stomp a plethora of Marines thanks to her Devil Fruit, which allows her to create giant limbs that can sprout from any surface, including a person’s body. The problem with this ability, however, is that any damage that is inflicted on these extra limbs will also apply to Robin herself, so while it might seem effective to create a giant fist to clobber a Marine battleship, if their cannons manage to reach the giant hands, Robin will also feel the brunt of the attack.
While an extremely powerful Devil Fruit, it can therefore be a little unreliable to throw out, since on some occasions, it can wipe out a batch of enemies in a single go, but if the opponent is a little more stubborn, the situation can get ugly pretty quickly for Robin if she’s not careful.
Isle Isle Fruit
Pizarro Can Become An Island, But He Feels All Of Its Pain
- Risk: The User Feels The Island’s Pain
Pizarro possesses one of the most bizarre Devil Fruits in the entire series, but it has also been shown to be one that can strike fear into the eyes of even the most dangerous of pirates and Marines. The way it works is, Pizarro can fuse himself with an island, which he will then be able to control at will. During the Egghead Island arc, he was able to sprout limbs, which he then used to almost crush Garp and the rest of his Fleet, demonstrating just how immensely powerful this guy can truly become when awakening his true potential.
The catch, however, is a pretty big one, and it makes it so that the ability can actually be more of a detriment when used incorrectly. Any damage to the island’s surface will be inflicted on Pizarro himself, and considering how massive the surface area is, it means the pirate is always putting himself in danger anytime he uses it. One thing is for sure: Pizarro will definitely be thinking twice about using this fruit in the future after being flattened by Koby’s Honesty Impact.
Paw Paw Fruit
- Risk: Someone Must Absorb The Extracted Pain
Fans have been able to learn a lot more about Kuma thanks to the recent Egghead Island arc flashback, but while it was definitely fascinating to learn more about this former Warlord’s emotional backstory, there were also some extra scenes showing how his Devil Fruit works. The Paw Paw fruit can be utilized in a myriad of different ways, but when he was still a pastor, Kuma took it upon himself to push the pain out of people’s bodies so that his kingdom could be full of happy and healthy residents.
As Kuma himself explains, though, this pain, which takes the form of a large bubble, will only return to the user if someone else doesn’t consume it in their place. This meant that every time Kuma was healing someone, he would then destroy his own body behind the scenes to ensure nobody would feel bad for him. All it would take is for Kuma to absorb just a little too much pain for him to be down for good, though admittedly, it would need to be an extreme amount, considering the stature and durability that this former Warlord possesses. Nonetheless, though, it’s a fruit that carries with it a pretty big risk when used in this particular way.
Dark Dark Fruit
Overwhelming Power Comes At A Heavy Cost
- Risk: The User Receives More Damage From Basic Attacks
During their intense battle early on in the series, Blackbeard explains to Ace the details of his newly acquired Devil Fruit, which allows the maniacal pirate to control darkness itself. Unlike most Logia users, Blackbeard cannot turn himself into darkness whenever he pleases, and as a result, it means that the damage he receives from punches, blades, and bullets is amplified, since his Devil Fruit is absorbing absolutely everything thrown at him.
This can make the fruit extremely risky to actually use in practice, since, on the one hand, it has been shown to be capable of utterly decimating anyone who dares to stand up to its user, but on the other, it can result in Blackbeard himself receiving a lot of damage in the process. Because of this, Blackbeard needs to choose his targets carefully, as while weaker pirates and Marines may not be much of a problem, trying to take down those who can evade or resist his attacks can ultimately leave him wide open.
