Devil Fruits That Can Create Armies In One Piece

Devil Fruits are capable of giving their consumers powerful abilities in exchange for their ability to swim. A somewhat uncommon subset is the ability to create an army. This typically exists as a byproduct of their other abilities, which, in these cases, tend to involve a level of control over multiple beings who have been manipulated or entirely produced by the powers of their Devil Fruit.

Sometimes, there are limits imposed on the user or ways to undo their powers, but regardless, each of these users has the ability to control a number of subordinates at a time, thanks to their Devil Fruit powers.

Horo Horo no Mi

An Army of Hollows

The Horo Horo no Mi has the ability to create Hollows, transparent, often intangible white ghost-like beings with dark eyes along with pink lips and tongues. The majority of these are not directly combat-oriented. Negative Hollows pass through individuals, making them extremely self-critical, sometimes to the point of suicidal ideation. There are also explosive Toku Hollows, which are larger, tangible, and thus capable of attacking the opponent with an explosive shockwave. Hollows can be spread out and used to relay information to their user. They are also able to “hollow” themselves out, becoming a ghost with powers of flight, intangibility, and the ability to shift their size.

However, there are trade-offs to this ability. Hollows are incapable of manipulating pessimistic people, which Perona witnessed firsthand when attempting to hollow out Usopp. Additionally, connecting their consciousness to Hollows hinders the user’s ability to protect their physical body, and becoming a spirit themselves prevents them from attacking while leaving their body open to it.

Kage Kage no Mi

An Army of Zombies

• Current User: Gecko Moria

The Kage Kage no Mi is primarily based on shadow manipulation. The user has an extensive level of control over their own shadow, but they can also cut other people from their shadows. Gecko Moria uses this ability, in combination with a steady supply of corpses, to create zombies. Though these zombies maintain quirks from the shadows of the original owners, they tend to grow out of them, instead becoming full subordinates to their masters.

These shadows have several caveats. For one, zombies can return shadows to their owners by being fed salt or seawater, albeit proportional to the size of the respective zombie. Jinbe, a fish-man skilled in water manipulation, was capable of quickly purifying a number of zombies. Shadows can also return by way of simply destroying the corpse of the zombie. They can also be stolen to act against the user, such as when Luffy’s power was enhanced with a hundred shadows. Most frustratingly, zombies ironically rely on the holder of shadows being alive. Shadow-less beings have a significantly easier time dying, as exposure to sunlight without a shadow leads to fatal vaporization. This means that users of this Devil Fruit have to actively keep the original owners alive, but they also need to limit their autonomy to the extent that they do not die or attempt to regain their shadows.

Hobi Hobi no Mi

An Army of Toys

The Hobi Hobi no Mi allows its user to turn people or animals into toys. These toys are essentially automata that can be pushed into contracts and forced to follow them. The user can seemingly manipulate the shape of the toy the victims will become and also merge transformed victims into singular toys, such as headcracker dolls.

The victims will lose their Devil Fruit power, any weapons they may have, and the memories others have of them. This also allows for segments of a population to become easily controlled, while others are none the wiser about their true nature. As a side effect, the toys are essentially in an arrested aging process, meaning that they can come out the other end the exact age they were when they turned, as was the case for Kyros. This seems to be an extension of the Devil Fruit’s side effect of eternal youth for the user.

The most significant weakness the Hobi Hobi no Mi has is that the entire process can be undone as soon as the user is knocked out. Usopp exploited Sugar’s fear of his pained face to knock her out twice, effectively undoing her army each time. Toys also need to be given contracts, or else they can disobey the user as easily as anyone. While certain things like Devil Fruits and weapons will not pass over, a victim’s memory of their combat ability can become troublesome when combined with a lack of contract, which Kyros exemplified.

Soru Soru no Mi

An Army of Homies

• Current User: Charlotte “Big Mom” Linlin

The Soru Soru no Mi allows the user to manipulate lifespans by way of “souls.” Expelled souls can be infused into non-living objects, becoming sentient beings known as “Homies.” These beings make up a good portion of both Totto Land and the forces of the Big Mom Pirates. Charlotte Linlin, the current user, implements a tax system in her territories, where the cost of living is quite literal, as a portion of each user’s lifespan is routinely confiscated. This ensures that she has a steady supply for the creation of Homies.

While a number of Big Mom’s foot soldiers and various other subordinates are Homies, she has also used this ability to enchant her own ship, the Queen Mama Chanter, as well as give portions of her soul to her sword, fire, and thunderclouds. Big Mom is an intimidating figure, a fact that can ironically be used against her to a limited extent, as a portion of her stolen Vivre Card was enough to get her minions to back down from her enemies. Additionally, if someone is completely unafraid of her, she cannot steal their soul. Big Mom must also be able to fully verbalize her orders, and if her mouth is kept shut through certain means, she will be unable to communicate them. Homies are fully living beings and can be manipulated against their user with enough motivation. They can also be killed, either by extreme fear or fatal attacks.

Bisu Bisu no Mi

An Army of Biscuits

• Current User: Charlotte Cracker

The Bisu Bisu no Mi allows its user to create biscuits by clapping. This somewhat rudimentary ability creates fodder that the user can break down into crumbs which can be molded into humanoid biscuit figures. These biscuits have a level of physical hardness, as well as hollowness, which its current user, Charlotte Cracker, exploits to hide within them. Cracker has exploited this ability so regularly that his wanted poster erroneously identifies the common face of his puppets as being his own actual face.

The primary issue with these biscuits is their breakability. While they are actually quite hard to physically break through in solid form, liquid makes them soggy with minimal effort. This weakness was exploited in a drawn-out fight Cracker had with Nami and Luffy, where the former used her clima-tact to make the biscuits wet, while the latter ate the more easily consumable biscuits.

Kibi Kibi no Mi

An Army of Animals

• Current User: Kurozumi Tama

The Kibi Kibi no Mi is a Devil Fruit power that allows its user to create kibi dango, a Japanese dumpling made from proso millet grains. These dumplings are not nourishing, but they can be utilized to manipulate animals into following the commands of the creator once they are verbally issued. Animals subjected are essentially brainwashed into subservience, retaining their memories but now acting as subordinates of their new master. The dango created can also manipulate successful SMILE users, as they are effectively part animal. However, it stops short of manipulating Zoan users.

Even though Tama must create the dango, others like Usopp and the animals under her control are capable of distributing it, making the control process even easier. That said, the creation of the dango itself can quickly become exhausting if done in excess. The primary known weakness of the Kibi Kibi no Mi is its ability to wear off in a month. From that point onwards, the affected must decide if they want to continue serving the user or not. Tama notably made an impassioned plea to Speed, a horse SMILE user she brainwashed and befriended, to stay with her forever as a mother, which seems to have been reciprocated positively.

Gunyo Gunyo no Mi

An Army of Golems

• Current User: Prince Grus

The Gunyo Gunyo no Mi is a fairly recent Devil Fruit owned by SWORD’s Prince Grus. The full extent of the Devil Fruit’s abilities is unclear at present, but several applications have been shown. Beyond creating clay of various degrees of hardness, the user can also create golems, sentient clay beings who reform upon taking damage. Grus commonly has an entourage of three hulking golems, who seem to appear alongside him at various intervals.

It is unclear what exact limits the Devil Fruit has at present, making it possible that the current extent of Grus’s displayed abilities is not necessarily the fullest one. It is possible Grus could create more golems, but it’s also possible that there is a level of exhaustion involved in the creation of clay itself, as well as shaping it. That said, the process as shown does not appear to particularly exhaust Grus.
