Given that it has been twelve long years since the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, many fans assumed that Rockstar Games would now solely be working on Grand Theft Auto 6 and nothing else, but it looks like that’s not actually the case. Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, recently discussed Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto 6 in a new interview and revealed that the studio has “a lot of other things going on” outside of the highly anticipated title.
Unlike other popular franchises, such as Call of Duty or WWE 2K, new entries in the Grand Theft Auto series are few and far between. As one of the most popular video games of all time, Rockstar has become well-known for taking its time to perfect each new installment, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no different. After an epic reveal trailer in December 2023, Rockstar announced that it was targeting a Fall 2025 release for the next GTA game. However, the studio shared disappointing news earlier this year when it delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026. Rockstar said it needed additional time to ensure that the title lives up to the expectations previously set by the studio.
Take-Two Says Rockstar Is Working on More Than Just GTA 6
It’s highly likely that a large portion of Rockstar Games is currently involved in the development of Grand Theft Auto 6, but it looks like the studio may also have other projects already being worked on at the same time. In a new interview with CNBC (via TheGamer and Rockstar Mag), Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said that Rockstar has “a lot of other things going on” when asked how much of the studio is actually working on Grand Theft Auto 6. The CEO didn’t elaborate on what these “other things” were, but did state that the next Grand Theft Auto game is Rockstar’s “primary focus.”
Zelnick’s comments could allude to a magnitude of different projects, given that Rockstar has some pretty iconic IPs under its belt. Fans have been begging the studio for either a Bully remake or sequel for years now, but there has been very little in the way of leaks or rumors that suggest Rockstar intends to do anything with the nearly twenty-year-old title. What is more likely is that Rockstar is working on a current-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2. While the 2018 prequel can be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, rumors suggest Rockstar could be working on a native version with some big improvements.
Whatever Rockstar is working on outside of Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s going to be quite some time before fans get any official look at it. Many are currently concerned that the title could slip even further into 2026 if Rockstar feels it needs more polishing time. However, Zelnick has also made it clear that he’s confident in Grand Theft Auto 6‘s current release date. During the same interview with CNBC, the CEO said his “level of conviction” is high, reassuring fans that the chance of a second delay is unlikely.
