Nintendo Increasing Price Of Switch And Other Products In The US

Nintendo has announced that it’s raising the price of the original Switch and other Nintendo products in the US. Switch 2 pricing, however, will remain unchanged–at least for now.

Beginning August 3, the price of the Switch will go up “based on market conditions.” The regular Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and “select” accessories will get price increases. Game prices, for physical and digital titles, will not change.

The new prices, as reflected on Target’s website, are $230 for the Switch Lite, $340 for the standard Switch, and $400 for the Switch OLED. Original Switch Pro Controllers are now $80, while Switch 1 Joy-Con pairs went up $10 to $80.

As for the Switch 2, Nintendo said pricing for the system, along with physical and digital games and Nintendo Switch Online memberships, will not go up in price, at least not yet. Nintendo said, “Please note that price adjustments may be necessary in the future.”

While the price of Switch 2 consoles is not going up, Nintendo said “certain” Switch 2 accessories will see price increases, but it didn’t specify which products. Nintendo also said “select” Amiibo and the Alarmo clock will get more expensive. Specifically, the Alarmo clock is going up to $110, while Joy-Con 2 controllers are rising to $100.

Nintendo did not elaborate as to what “market conditions” it was referring to with regards to the price changes, but it’s likely related to the ongoing tariff saga. Just today, August 1, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs that have led to some market turmoil.

Analyst Daniel Ahmad pointed out that places where Switch consoles are produced, including Vietnam and China, are facing steeper tariff rates. He added that he “wouldn’t be surprised” to see Nintendo raise the price of the Switch 2 at some point down the road.

20% tariff on Vietnam, 30% tariff on China, 15% tariff on Japan. All markets that Nintendo relies on for hardware and software production.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo end up raising Switch 2 prices at some point as well.

Nintendo and tariffs have been tied together for some time. After all, Nintendo’s blockbuster Switch 2 Direct took place on April 2, the very same day that Trump announced massive tariffs on various countries around the world–including where Switch 2 units are produced. This prompted Nintendo to delay Switch 2 preorders and sparked concerns that Nintendo would raise the price of the Switch 2. That did not end up happening, but Nintendo did raise prices on some Switch 2 accessories, and now it’s happening again.

The US price hike for the Switch comes not long after Nintendo of Canada announced price increases for that country on the original Switch.

Nintendo made this price hike announcement today, August 1, on the same day that it reported earnings for the latest quarter. The original Switch sold 980,000 units globally, for the quarter that ended on June 30, a sharp decline of 53.5% year-over-year. Nintendo said the fact that the Switch is now in its ninth year in the market contributed to the decline, though the company said sales remain “stable.”

The Switch 2, meanwhile, sold 5.82 million units globally from launch through June 30, rising to 6 million+ after its first seven weeks in the market.
