Lego Soundwave Transformers 2-In-1 Model Is Available Now For Insiders

Lego’s third Transformers buildable figure is now available for Lego Insiders. The 1,505-piece model of the Decepticon Soundwave costs $190 and is a timed-exclusive on the Lego Store. Lego Insiders is a free rewards program, so it won’t cost you anything to sign up to purchase the set ahead of its official August 4 launch date. Soundwave is a 2-in-1 build that seamlessly converts from robot to cassette player and back again. Considering the popularity of the other two Transformers Lego sets–Optimus Prime and Bumblebee–it’d be smart to snag Soundwave during the early access window, as big Lego Store exclusives often wind up backordered (60-day wait).

Check out all of the details you need to know about Lego Icons: Transformers: Soundwave below. If you haven’t picked up Lego’s recreations of the iconic Autobots, you can save 20% on Optimus Prime at Target and a few bucks on Bumblebee at Walmart. The Optimus Prime deal is sold out at Amazon and Walmart. Check out our dedicated story on Lego Optimus Prime for more details on the original member of the series.

The first Decepticon to join Lego’s Transformers collection is a worthy opponent for the leader of the Autobots. The Soundwave build mirrors Optimus Prime in terms of overall size and piece count. The 13-inch Soundwave buildable figure is only slightly shorter than Optimus (13.5 inches). Soundwave is a 1,505-piece build, just three bricks shy of the 1,508 pieces it takes to construct Optimus.

Soundwave is based on his appearance during the G1 era, just like Optimus and Bumblebee. He is armed with a large laser blaster and has a shoulder-mounted rocket pod with darts.

The coolest aspect of all three Lego Transformers sets is the ability to convert the completed figure from a robot into an alternate form. For Optimus and Bumblebee, this means a truck and classic Beetle, respectively. Soundwave, meanwhile, transforms into his signature cassette player. You can switch freely between each display mode, which is a unique feature for 2-in-1 Lego sets, which typically involve removing sections of a model and rebuilding with different pieces.

Soundwave has a couple of features not found in the other two Transformers sets. He’s joined by small buildable versions of Ravage and Laserbeak. Both of these figures have 2-in-1 designs, too. You can convert his companions into cassette tapes and store them in the cassette deck. It’s also the only one in the series with sound effects. Soundwave has action sounds and lines of dialogue that can be heard by pressing the play button below the tape deck.

Rounding out the Soundwave kit is a buildable display plaque with an information card and a cassette tape minifigure.

Soundwave is one of many new Lego sets released on August 1. If you like robots/mechs, you may be interested in the newest member of the Lego Fortnite lineup: Mecha Team Leader. The 2,503-piece build is the largest Fortnite building set to date, and it also towers over the Transformers figures at 17.5 inches.
