It seems like crossplay is a fairly new idea in the past decade, but it has in fact been a feature in games for longer. For example, one of the more prominent ones was Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, which was a 2001 release. PS2 and Dreamcast players could play together, and there were even catchy magazine ads to showcase it.
A more modern example is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and there are tons of other multiplayer crossplay games. Are there any RPGs with this feature though? Let’s jump into the rabbit hole and find out for any RPG fans who have friends between multiple consoles.
Borderlands 4
Millions Of Guns Are Waiting
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Borderlands 4 is the latest co-op game to offer crossplay between consoles. It’s also one of the few games that still offer split-screen co-op for local play, along with online options. Four players, between all consoles and PC, can join together in the campaign and if players want, they can turn crossplay off.
With four characters to choose from and billions of guns to find, Borderlands 4 should keep players occupied in its open-world biomes for a while. Additionally, it offers the ability to replay missions, a significant change for the Borderlands series.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Enjoy Some Meat Together
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four Online
Monster Hunter Wilds no longer requires Monster Hunter fans to play co-op to have a good time, as there are AI-assistant characters. However, co-op is still one of the best reasons to buy the game. Up to four players can fight monsters online in the campaign or side missions, or just explore the world between the consoles and PC version. Also, crossplay can be disabled in the co-op menu.
Another big feature change is that the game is fully open-world now, meaning players can go from one end of the map to the other if they just want to explore on their mount, which is called a Seikret. Choose one of fourteen weapons, master them, build new gear from monster parts, and repeat.
Diablo 4
Face Evil Across All Consoles
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Diablo 4 is yet another game that evolved into an open-world experience, which is quite expansive even from a top-down perspective. The classes were classic to the Diablo series, like Rogue and Sorcerer. Diablo 4 is a great game for anyone who wants to play couch co-op with a friend, but a well-divided group of classes online would be more strategic.
There are many consoles to choose from, all of which talk to each other, including the PC version. Logging into Battle.net will make the connections smoother for everyone. While the story is more impressive than ever before, Diablo 4 is still designed around zoning out with friends and looting dungeons. It’s still fun alone as well, and isn’t too difficult depending on the setting.
Destiny 2
Prepare To Strike
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Three-Six Online
Destiny 2 has come a long way since it debuted in 2017. Like its predecessor, it launched at full price with paid DLC after, but then it switched to a free-to-play formula. Not all missions fully support co-op, as there are specific ones that range in how many players can join. Strikes typically offer three-player co-op, while most Raids offer six-player co-op.
Strikes are definitely the more iconic missions of the Destiny franchise. Crossplay does work between all consoles and PC, but there is a catch. Campaign objectives, such as exploring or going on Strikes, will match all players together. However, competitive multiplayer matches will separate console players into one category, and PC players into the other.
Baldur’s Gate 3
A Tactical Squad
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game designed around choices from every single gameplay aspect. There are races, classes, and even character-specific choices in the beginning. The branching story is where the most replay value will come out, as players may want to experience the same game on repeat but from different angles.
The campaign can even be enjoyed with friends, which is not that active, seeing as how Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based tactical RPG. This slower pace may be perfect for certain types of players though, but everyone involved will control their own character in the story in battle. Crossplay does require registration with Larian to play between the console and PC versions.
Final Fantasy 14
A Massive Grouping
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four-Eight Online (For Most Parties)
Final Fantasy 14 is the most recent MMO based on the Final Fantasy series, and most fans of the genre know that these games are meant to be experienced with large groups of players. Most of the main quests focus on solo gameplay, but there are plenty of co-op activities too, which vary in party size.
Simply exploring the world and teaming up with others along the way to fight random mobs of monsters or giant bosses can be fun too. Final Fantasy 14 is a time sink and requires only the most dedicated players to join to get the most out of the experience. Crossplay will talk between all systems using the player’s Square Enix account, with the only exception being PS3 as that version is no longer supported in general.
Outriders
Get Those Magical Guns Up
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Three Online
Outriders is an underrated co-op game that came and went like a flash in 2021. It only offers three-player co-op like Destiny 2, but the full campaign can be experienced between all systems, including the older ones like PS4 and Xbox One. Crossplay can be switched on and off in the options depending on player preference.
There are four classes to choose from. Pyromancer is one of the coolest choices, as players will learn to master fire powers to use alongside their arsenal of guns. However, the Technomancer’s variety of gadgets can be useful too, and overall, each class will be useful to help build a diverse co-op party.
Palworld
Train Together
- Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
- Co-Op Options: Four Online
Palworld is still in early access, but a 2025 update made crossplay a viable option between all active systems. Up to four players can normally team up to adventure together in the world, but anyone with dedicated servers can host massive 32-player campaigns. That’s a bit much, but it is an option.
The core experience of Palworld revolves around catching monsters, called Pals, and then training them to fight or help cultivate land. Palworld is part monster-catching RPG, part life sim. All the menial tasks will be more fulfilling with friends helping online.
