A new marketing email from publisher EA claims that the upcoming Battlefield 6 will be capable of hitting as high as 120 FPS while in Performance Mode on consoles. Although it’s not unheard of for a first-person shooter to achieve such a high frame rate while in Performance Mode, as 2020’s Black Ops Cold War proved, Battlefield 6 is a true current-gen experience filled with large-scale battles, all-out destruction, and some gorgeous visuals to top it all off.
Performance and Fidelity modes were initially introduced all the way back in the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X era, with titles such as Rise of the Tomb Raider allowing players to choose between 30 FPS at 4K resolution or 60 FPS at 1080p. The graphical options then became much more common in the age of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with most heavy-hitting AAA titles offering players the choice between higher FPS or better graphical fidelity. Now, the PlayStation 5 Pro has taken things even further, allowing titles such as Mafia: The Old Country to offer Variable Refresh Rate, support for 120Hz displays, and higher dynamic resolution in both graphical modes.
Battlefield 6’s Performance Mode Supposedly Hits 120 FPS on Consoles
EA and DICE have already stated that they are taking a console-first approach with Battlefield 6, largely due to the cheating epidemic that is occurring in multiplayer titles on PC. Now it seems that the studios may be doubling down on that approach, as a new marketing email from EA claims that Performance Mode will be capable of achieving 120 FPS on consoles. There is a chance that this is solely in regard to the PlayStation 5 Pro, but the email from the publisher does not clarify exactly which platforms will be able to reach such high frame rates.
Given that Digital Foundry discovered during the Battlefield 6 open beta that the shooter was capable of achieving up to 110 FPS on the base PS5, it seems like all consoles will actually have support for 120 FPS while in Performance Mode. The report notes that, on average, Battlefield 6 maintains a frame rate of around 80-90 FPS on consoles. It’s also worth noting that even if Battlefield 6 can achieve 120 FPS, players will need a 120Hz display to actually experience the high frame rate.
There are now just a few days to go until Battlefield 6 releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The next entry in the series is set to launch on October 10 and has quickly become one of the most anticipated releases of the year following its hugely successful open beta in August. The playtest broke records for the Battlefield franchise, becoming the largest beta in the series’ history, even surpassing the concurrent player count of the Call of Duty HQ app on Steam, which encompasses both Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
