The developers behind Fallout 76 have bad news for players who are still hoping for crossplay features to be added to the game. Creative director John Rush and production director Bill Lacoste spoke about Fallout 76 as it’s prepping for its Burning Springs update.
Fallout 76 has come a very long way since its launch way back in 2018. Initially, the world seemed sparse due to completely lacking human NPCs, and the title had significant technical issues at launch. Starting with the Wastelanders update, the general impression of the game started to improve, as the Fallout 76 developers added human NPCs in response to fan demand. Now, however, the developers are revealing that there’s one feature that’s likely never going to be added to the game.
Fallout 76 Likely Isn’t Going to Get Crossplay
In a roundtable interview, John Rush and Bill Lacoste discussed Burning Springs, plus addressed some questions and thoughts fans have had. One frequently requested feature, crossplay and cross-save functionality, was also brought up. They explained that the team has no plans for the feature at the moment, and it sounds highly unlikely it will be added in the future. Lacoste expressed that due to Fallout 76 now being seven years old, introducing a major feature like this would be a “huge technical hurdle.”
Lacoste added that these kinds of features need to be considered and built upon when a game is in the early stages of development. While it sounds like it wouldn’t be impossible to do, the team is more interested in creating content to keep the current Fallout 76 playerbase satisfied. However, with that said, it’s not completely out of the question. Rush stated that the team regularly discusses it, and that the notion isn’t forgotten, and “it’s not a hard no, but it’s definitely not a yes.” Sadly, it sounds like players who have been hoping to seamlessly play across multiple platforms with cross-progression, or to play with friends on different platforms, that it’s not in the cards for the foreseeable future.
While some players may be disappointed by this development, there’s nonetheless plenty of exciting content to look forward to. The game will soon receive its next update, which will introduce new quests, regions, as well as a new bounty system featuring none other than The Ghoul from the Prime Video Fallout TV series. Early previews of Fallout 76‘s Burning Springs update have been positive, but fans will have to wait until December to see if they agree with the general consensus.
