Now that the PlayStation State of Play has ended, Nintendo has stepped in with some surprise news of its own. The company, completely by surprise, has released a new Fire Emblem game for mobile devices called Fire Emblem Shadows, and it’s an unlikely blend of strategy and social deduction.
Fire Emblem Shadows gives players control of a party of warriors, and asks them to choose between Light and Shadow. As the team progresses through dungeons, the player must determine which of his allies is a traitor, and act accordingly before it’s too late.
Battles play out in a strategy format that doesn’t quite follow the usual Fire Emblem way, but does contain some elements of it. Instead of turn-based action, battles take place in real time, though players can designate certain parts of the arena for each character to focus on.
This is the second major piece of Fire Emblem news to come from Nintendo in September. The Nintendo Direct presentation from earlier in the month ended with the reveal of the next installment in the franchise, called Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.
Fire Emblem Shadows is available now on both iOS and Android devices.
