According to keen-eyed fans, some game cases for Nintendo Switch titles have been swapped from clear and transparent to red ones similar to those used for Nintendo Switch 2 games. The change to the original Nintendo Switch game cases was posted on social media, though it is unclear if the new red cases will be what Nintendo goes with for future releases.
Through the original Nintendo Switch’s life cycle, the majority of physical games released for the system came in clear, transparent game cases. This allowed developers and publishers to print reversible covers that fans can utilize for display purposes. By comparison, the Nintendo Switch 2’s game cases are colored red and are not transparent. While this makes them stand out from other game cases on the market, the Nintendo Switch 2’s red cases received a mixed response from fans, namely from the inability to show off reversible art on both the inside and outside the case.
Some Switch Games Are Reportedly Being Sold In Red Cases
Although the Nintendo Switch 2’s game case layout is a departure from its predecessor, some games for the original Nintendo Switch are receiving an apparent change. As reported by Nintendeal on Twitter, the German retailer Media Markt was selling copies of Red Dead Redemption for the original Nintendo Switch, though the game came in a red case rather than a clear one. The same red case was utilized in another Rockstar Games port, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy. However, both games were sold with downloadable vouchers inside, leaving the red cases as a novelty item. In response, another Twitter user named Tinesgar shared a screenshot taken by another user that showed Japanese copies of the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle would use a red case.
Despite the apparent case color changes, the layouts of all three Nintendo Switch game covers remained intact, as the console’s logo remained on the top left of the cover. It is unclear if the swap from clear to red cases for Nintendo Switch titles will be the standard moving forward. However, the change remains a puzzling decision by Nintendo, as the differences between the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 game cases would make it easier for consumers to tell the two apart. Ergo, swapping some Nintendo Switch game cases from clear to red could lead to some confusion among some users.
It is unclear if the Nintendo Switch’s red game cases will make it to other markets. With upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A launching on both Switch and Switch 2, only time will tell how physical sales will be affected.
