Even more Dragon Quest remakes are reportedly in the works, according to a recently shared hint by the series creator, Yuji Horii. While none of them are expected to hit the market before Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, that’s not to say they won’t be focused on the earlier entries preceding DQ7.
Square Enix announced the remake of Dragon Quest 7 during the latest Nintendo Direct, which took place on September 12. The modernized version of Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is scheduled for release on February 5, 2026.
Yuji Horii Hints at Dragon Quest 4–6 Remakes Being in the Works
Speaking during the September 15 episode of “Yuubou and Mashirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku” monthly livestream, Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii hinted at even more remakes being in the pipeline. Around the 44:45 mark, co-host (and manga industry veteran) Kazuhiko “Mashirito” Torishima asked Horii why Square Enix decided to remake Dragon Quest 7 rather than the three entries immediately preceding it, none of which have been modernized in recent history. Horii responded by saying: “a lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance,” as first reported by RPG Site.
Horii’s remark does not necessarily confirm that every single title from the second Dragon Quest trilogy is up in line for a remake. But it does appear to imply at least some are, and that Square Enix is potentially weighing even more projects further down the line. One reason why Dragon Quest 7 may have jumped the queue is practical: Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6 form a loosely connected Zenithian Trilogy, named after the fictional sky castle of Zenithia that appears in every one of them. As such, modernizing them could require more coordinated work than a standalone entry. Assuming no major story changes are planned, remaking any single member of the Zenithian Trilogy without the other two may not make sense from a storytelling perspective.
Square Enix said that the modernized version of Dragon Quest 7 would tighten pacing by removing side content with little or no direct relevance to the main plot, while simultaneously adding new scenarios. The remake is also promised to introduce broader visual updates, as well as system refinements that are yet to be detailed.
A lot of things are moving around, but [the Dragon Quest 7 remake] was just done first by chance.
As a reminder, Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is also currently in the works, being scheduled to launch for PC and consoles on October 30. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was released in mid-November 2024, debuting to rave reviews and selling over 2 million copies in just over 20 days. In the meantime, the next mainline installment, Dragon Quest 12, is still waiting for a status update. It was originally announced in 2021, but Square Enix has shared little new info about it ever since, save for sporadically confirming the Unreal Engine 5-powered project was still in development.
